Plaza España (or Plaça Espanya in Catalan) is a major square located in Barcelona, Spain. It was constructed for the International Exhibition in 1929, which was hosted at the foot of Montjuïc, a prominent hill in Barcelona. The square is one of the city’s most important transport hubs, serving as a junction for several major avenues including Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and Avinguda del Paral·lel.
One of the square’s most notable features is its large fountain, designed by Josep Maria Jujol, a collaborator of Antoni Gaudí. Around the square, there are several impressive buildings and structures, including the Venetian Towers, which are two high towers that mark the avenue leading up to the MNAC (National Art Museum of Catalonia). The former bullring, Arenas de Barcelona, has been converted into a shopping center and offers a panoramic view of the city from its rooftop.
Plaza España is also a key gateway to the Fira de Barcelona, one of the biggest trade fair grounds in Europe, hosting numerous exhibitions and conferences annually.
